As New North’s CIO, Andrew will lead New North’s claims assessment process. He will also generate new business for New North.
Andrew, Chris Nott and an independent barrister (chosen from New North’s pool of independent counsel) constitute New North’s Investment Committee.
Andrew has practised for more than 25 years as a litigator, running and resolving the types of commercial disputes that New North will be targeting to fund. The ‘Legal 500’ and ‘Chambers and Partners’ legal directories recognise his litigation finance expertise.
Since the inception of litigation funding in the UK, Andrew has developed business relationships with most of the UK’s litigation funders, whether by advising them or working closely with them on funded claims for his clients.
Andrew has advised litigation funders on the merits of funding applications (made by other law firms) and assisted them with monitoring and managing those claims to successful conclusion. He has drafted litigation funding agreements and related documentation for funders and advised them on litigation management and fee agreements drafted by applicant lawyers. He has also advised lawyers in other firms on how to structure their litigation management, funding, insurance and fee agreements.
Andrew has worked with Chris Nott for the past 23 years, building a team of 30+ litigators at Capital Law who shape potential claims into viable litigation funding opportunities, secure the best terms to pursue them for their clients, and manage them to a successful conclusion. These skills were enhanced by a history of running claims where the payment of some or all their fees has been dependent on success, which sharpens the focus not only on the legal merits of a claim but the route to the money, meticulous cost budgeting and constant risk management.
Andrew has spoken about litigation funding at the Legal 500 Commercial Litigation Conference, provides training on litigation funding and alternative fee arrangements, and has published material in this area, including in Financier Worldwide, In-House Lawyer magazine and Huffington Post.
